Regional Overview
Both BC and the Yukon are facing ongoing syphilis epidemics, and access to HIV, STBBI and sexual health services remains a significant challenge. Furthermore, BC is the epicentre for the opioid crisis, creating additional complexities with regard to preventing, testing, and treating HIV and STBBIs.
Priorities
- Studying new preventative interventions for HIV and STBBI, including doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxyPEP), pre-exposure prophylaxis (doxyPrEP), and long-acting injectables
- Contributing to the evidence base in under- and un-investigated populations, including women and youth
- Improving access to HIV, STBBI & sexual health services in remote & rural areas
- Continuing to integrate harm reduction approaches into research and services
- Exploring new testing approaches including the potential role of dry blood spot testing and virtual testing services
Additional Information
Since ART and PrEP have become increasingly available, there has been a significant decrease in HIV diagnoses among at-risk populations in BC, such as men who have sex with men and newcomers to the province. However, cases of STBBIs like syphilis continue to rise throughout the region, including in the heterosexual population, in pregnancy and among people experiencing homelessness and substance use issues. In the Yukon and Northern BC, geographic barriers limit equitable access to prevention and sexual health services in rural and remote areas, highlighting the need for research to address this gap.
