Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta
Regional Overview
Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta consistently report the highest rates of HIV infections nationally. Linkage to care and viral suppression among people in the prairies who are living with HIV are falling well below global 95-95-95 targets.
Priorities
- Expanding and developing HIV prevention strategies, including access to PrEP with a focus on women
- Improving the prevention, testing, and treatment of syphilis and other STBBIs
- Enhancing cultural and peer supports
- Improving responsive care and reduce stigma
- Facilitating community engagement, education, and uptake of evidence-based approaches
Additional Information
The HIV epidemic in the prairie provinces has shifted towards heterosexual transmission, disproportionately impacting women of childbearing years, particularly within marginalized Indigenous communities. HIV and HCV infections among people who use drugs continue to rise. Concurrent epidemics, including mental health and addictions, HCV, STI and syphilis are major regional challenges.
The prairies provinces are committed to the capacity building of culturally responsive approaches and peer led support for people living with and those at risk for HIV and STBBI transmission.

The leadership for the Prairies team includes an Indigenous Co-lead, an academic Co-leads, a Community Representative, an Early Career Co-lead, and a KM Liaison.
