BC & Yukon Regional Team

Regional Overview

Both BC and the Yukon are facing ongoing syphilis epidemics, and access to HIV, STBBI and sexual health services remains a significant challenge. Furthermore, BC is the epicentre for the opioid crisis, creating additional complexities with regard to preventing, testing, and treating HIV and STBBIs.

Priorities
  • Prevention and New Interventions: DoxyPEP, DoxyPrEP, long- acting injectables, real-world intervention trials, gender-specific and inclusive approaches to prevention
  • Access and Equity in Rural, Remote, and Underserved Regions: Improve equitable access to HIV/STBBI services and research across BC & Yukon
  • Living Well with HIV and STBBIs: Advance research on comorbidities, holistic health, and wellbeing for people living with HIV and STBBIs
  • Aging and the Lifespan of Care: Examine how needs and experiences evolve across generations and stages of life
  • Community Capacity, Training, and Knowledge Exchange: Strengthen community and researcher capacity to engage in collaborative, community-driven research

Additional Information

Since ART and PrEP have become increasingly available, there has been a significant decrease in HIV diagnoses among at-risk populations in BC, such as men who have sex with men and newcomers to the province. However, cases of STBBIs like syphilis continue to rise throughout the region, including in the heterosexual population, in pregnancy and among people experiencing homelessness and substance use issues. In the Yukon and Northern BC, geographic barriers limit equitable access to prevention and sexual health services in rural and remote areas, highlighting the need for research to address this gap.
