Regional Overview
The Atlantic region spans four provinces with similar challenges regarding the burden of HIV and STBBIs: a relative lack of resources and capacity to address them, and poor access to primary care. Over recent years, the region has experienced increasing rates of infections and outbreaks of HIV, hepatitis C, and other STBBIs.
Priorities
- Developing approaches for low threshold testing and linkage to care
- Expanding and evaluating novel testing and treatment models for HIV, HCV and bacterial STIs
- Simplifying community-based HCV elimination strategies, including in correctional settings
- Leveraging expertise in basic science to explore HCV immunology and vaccine development
Additional Information
The Atlantic provinces have growing challenges preventing, diagnosing, and treating hepatitis C and bacterial STIs like syphilis and gonorrhoea. Up to 50% of people live in rural and remote regions making physically accessing services a notable barrier to care.
Atlantic Team Leads
The leadership for the Atlantic team includes an Indigenous Co-lead, two academic Co-leads, one Community Representative, an Early Career Researcher, and a KM Liaison.
