CTN 344: PANACHE

PANACHE: Preferences And Needs for Aging Care among HIV-positive Elderly people in Canada

About the Study

PANACHE is a community-based study that builds on the PANACHE Ontario study (2019), with the report available in English and French, and the connections of Realize, a national HIV organization focused on research, education, policy, and practice change. The study aims to identify the most significant unmet needs for care and support among older people living with HIV in Canada by evaluating the contribution of biological and social determinants of health and service access.

Background

People living with HIV in Canada now have a life expectancy that is within a decade of their HIV-negative peers. However, much of the ongoing and published HIV and age-related research in Canada has a biomedical focus. It does not explore the holistic, social, financial, or emotional impact of growing older with HIV and what it means to age well.

The PANACHE project will use a national online survey that explores the multidimensional determinants of health and well-being in older people (60+) living with HIV in Canada, from their met and unmet social, care, and service needs to the factors affecting their ability to live independently and autonomously. The survey will address key knowledge gaps related to this population.

Study Approach

This study is seeking to enrol 500 people living with HIV age 60+ from across Canada. Participation in the study includes completing a survey, either online or with remote support from a Community Researcher. The survey will collect information on participants demographic characteristics, health status, health care and community service use/barriers, income, housing, food security, informal supports, activities of daily living and autonomy. The surveys will be administered in English and French.

Potential participants will self-identify and complete a pre-screen online or by phone with the Research Coordinator. Eligible participants will be sent an email with a unique survey link or the Research Coordinator will schedule an appointment to complete the survey with a Community Researcher.

The results of the study will be compiled into a community report that will be posted on the Realize website. The study team aims to mobilize the knowledge gained from this study to inform changes to policies, practices, and programs for this population.
