Fatoumata Korika Tounkara is an epidemiologist whose research focuses on human papillomavirus (HPV), cervical cancer prevention, and health inequities related to sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs) among marginalized women. She holds a PhD in Epidemiology from Université Laval, preceded by a Master’s degree in Biochemistry, providing her with an interdisciplinary background bridging molecular biology and population health. Her doctoral research examined HPV prevalence, persistence, and determinants in a longitudinal cohort of 600 female sex workers in Benin and Mali. As a CTN+ Postdoctoral Fellow at the CHUM Research Centre (Université de Montréal) under the supervision of Dr. Valérie Martel-Laferrière, she studies HPV prevalence and the cervical cancer screening continuum among women who use drugs in Montreal, within the CIHR-funded FEMMES+ cohort. She also serves as an Assistant Lecturer-Researcher at the Faculty of Medicine in Bamako, Mali. Dr. Tounkara has authored 31 peer-reviewed publications and her work has been supported by several competitive awards, including doctoral funding from the FRQS and the CTN+ Postdoctoral Fellowship.
